In an interview for Boxing Life Stories Speight said he had his first amateur fight aged 10 and had around 77 amateur fights winning over half. He boxed Tommy Langford four times (winning two losing two) and Sam Maxwell (semi-final junior ABAs, ended as a draw but lost on countback).

Speight joined the Royal Marines and wanted to box for them but left whilst in training as he couldn't turn pro while a Marine.

Reading 'Damage' by Tris Dixon prompted Speight to retire from boxing. He now coaches fighters.
