Jan Olij was a succesful Dutch amateur boxer who was arrested in 1945 for having committed war crimes as a member of the Waffen-SS. He managed to escape from detention in 1947 and fled to Spain. The following year he started to box professionally under the name of Jack Oley in Spanish Basque Country and with the money he earned was able to buy a boat ticket to Argentina, embarking on the Monte Udala on May 6 1949. He was sentenced in absentia to 20 years of imprisonment by a Dutch Court in 1949. Olij remained a fugitive from justice for the rest of his life and died in Argentina in 1996.
