Javier Gutierrez was also nicknamed "El Costeñito". Originally from a coastal town in Mexico, he was booked in Los Angeles by Sparky Rudolph. Although very short in stature, Gutierrez was known as a good-looking, baby-faced fighter, topped with a full head of extremely curly hair. He held the California state bantamweight title, eventually losing that title to Cecil Schoonmaker, and tried for the featherweight crown without success.
