During World War II Jean Engelen was active in the Belgian Resistance under the pseudonym Jean Storm. He was arrested by the Gestapo in the summer of 1944 and deported to Camp Neuengamme in Hamburg, Germany, where he was last seen in November 1944. Rumours of his death that had circulated since mid 1945 were confirmed in June 1946, when it was reported that he had died after falling ill at the camp during labour.
