After a initial five bouts to begin his professional boxing career, Celestine was sentenced to prison for 15 years on a conviction of armed robbery. Celestine continued to box in the Orleans Parish Prison boxing program, where he was rediscovered by local manager Les Bonano. With the help of Bonano, Celestine was able to rebuild his boxing career, which saw him become a contender in the Light heavyweight class, and lose a title bout with Michael Spinks. Celestine later worked as a trainer, most notably with John Duplessis who lost a title fight with Julio Cesar Chavez in 1991.
