Jerry Martin 175 lbs beat Dale Grant 174 lbs by TKO at 1:43 in round 12 of 12

  • Date: 1979-08-07
  • Location: Steel Pier Arena, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA
  • Referee: Paul Venti

"In the scheduled 12 round main event for the vacant NABF light heavyweight title, Jerry 'The Bull' Martin, 175, Philadelphia stopped Dale Grant, 174, Tacoma, Wash. in the 12th round. Grant started fast and just out-quicked Martin. After six rounds, it was virtually even what with the jab-right cross of Grant cancelling out the left hooks to the body by Martin. The last six rounds was a different situation, however. The body shots took their toll as Martin brought his right hand into the fray and dropped Dale once each in rounds 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 - each from a right hand. Grant pulled himself together after the 3rd knockdown to win the 10th and take the lead in the 11th before getting caught again. Referee Paul Venti stopped matters with Grant trying hard to back away from the charging 'Bull' after arising from the last knockdown." -Boxing Digest, October, 1979 issue

  • Martin took this bout on 10 days notice after bruising his right hand in a bout with Willie 'The Bull' Taylor 3 weeks earlier.
