- Referee: Harry Gibbs 49.25-49
"Jerry Quarry, the world's No. 2 ranked heavyweight contender, narrowly outpointed Larry Middleton Tuesday night in an all American heavyweight 10 round bout. Quarry's fitness and strength carried him through in the end, but Middleton's long reach caused him a lot of trouble. In the early rounds Middleton, ranked 8th in the world, and four inches taller than Quarry at 6'4", held his opponent off with long left hands. By the middle of the fight at Wembley Pool, Quarry got his booming counter-punching going and punished Middleton severely to the body. Quarry made a desperate attempt to finish the fight in the last round, but an obviously tired Middleton held his own." -Associated Press
