Jerry Quarry vs. Rufus Brassell
Jerry Quarry 203 lbs beat Rufus Brassell 199 lbs by KO at 1:32 in round 2 of 10
- Date: 1970-03-03
- Location: Convention Center, Miami Beach, Florida, USA
- Referee: Cy Gottfried
"Embarrassed by an after-the-bell knockdown at the end of round one, Jerry Quarry needed only 78 seconds of the 2nd round Tuesday night to dispose of Rufus Brassell. Angelo Dundee, Brassell's manager, needed smelling salts and slaps in the face to bring the loser back to conciousness - and this took nearly a minute and a half. Quarry seemed to be well ahead in the 1st round, when Brassell caught him on the chin with a quick right hand with 5 seconds remaining. Quarry rocked, stumbled backwards and dropped his hands. But the bell rang. Not hearing the bell, Brassell pounced on Quarry and hit with another right. Quarry went to the floor for about six seconds but referee Cy Gottfried ruled it no knockdown. Quarry, bleeding slightly from the left eye and cut inside his mouth, went after Brassell as the 2nd round opened. He clipped Brassell with a long left 78 seconds into the round. Brassell went over on his back and in 10 more seconds Gottfried had counted him out." -Miami News

- "I heard the bell and dropped my hands. He really made a mistake hitting me after the bell like that. I was going to get him if I had to die for it." -Jerry Quarry
- "We hoped to keep Quarry pinned on the end of a jab. But in the 2nd round, instead of holding Quarry at arms length, Brassell made the mistake of grabbing at him with both hands. And Quarry took advantage of it." -Angelo Dundee, Brassell's manager
