"Jerry Quarry, No. 3 contender for the world's heavyweight championship, protected his high ranking by winning a unanimous decision over Willis Earls in the main event of Promoter Reuben Rodrigues' fight card Tuesday night at Joe Freeman Coliseum. Quarry, from Bellflower, Calif., held the upper hand all the way over his opponent from Austin, Texas, but never succeeded in flooring Earls. Quarry came out of the battle with a cut over his left eye, received in the 7th round, and a bruised ear. Earls suffered a bloody nose and his left eye was nearly closed at the end of the scrap." -San Antonio Express
