As an amateur boxer, Jerry "Butch" Smith was a Louisiana State Golden Gloves champion, a Southern AAU gold medalist, a 1976 Western Olympic Trials champion and U.S. Olympic Trails semi-finalist, and a 1977 and 1978 All-Air Force champion. He was ranked as high as fourth in the United States Amateur Ranking and 10th in the World Amateur Rankings in 1976 through 1978.

Smith also boxed under the name Butch Smith as a professional.
