Jersey Joe Walcott vs. Joe Baksi
Jersey Joe Walcott 188 lbs beat Joe Baksi 218 lbs by PTS in round 10 of 10
- Date: 1945-08-02
- Location: Convention Hall, Camden, New Jersey, USA
- Referee: Paul Cavalier 6-3
"A short, squat slugger named Jersey Joe Walcott, who started his ring career as a sparring partner for Joe Louis back in 1936, is the newest light on the heavyweight horizon. A comparative unknown in top-flight boxing circles, Jersey Joe won a convincing 10 round verdict over Joe Baksi, the nation's number two wartime heavyweight, before 3,500 at Camden's Convention Hall last night. Walcott went into a strategic retreat for the first three rounds, nimbly skipping out of the way of Baksi's smashes, and after he had succeeded in tiring his opponent, uncorked a sizzling attack of his own, which had Baksi groggy at the finish. The only official, Referee Paul Cavalier, cast his vote for Walcott, who scaled 188 lbs. to Baksi's 212 1/2." -Associated Press
