"Joey Maxim turned one of boxing's biggest upsets in years when he gained a disputed 10 round decision over Jersey Joe Walcott before 7,709, Camden's largest outdoor boxing crowd in history, at the Camden ball park. Maxim, soundly beaten about the stomach and kidneys in the first two rounds, displayed some clever boxing in the later rounds to make Jersey Joe look bad on several occasions. Nevertheless, it was Walcott who continually forced the fight and the decision of Referee Paul Cavalier, the only official, came as a stunning surprise." -Associated Press
