In 1891, Barron knocked out Artie Tully to claim the Australian lightweight title. A year later, he fought a 22-round draw with Hall-of-Famer Young Griffo. He traveled to the United States in 1892 and knocked out Bobby Dobbs, the lightweight champion of California, in two rounds.

In May of 1894, Barron sent a letter from the United States indicating he had broken his hand in two places while in a match with Charles (Kid) McCoy. Barron was told by a doctor that he may never again be able to close his hand.

After retiring from the ring, Barron taught boxing at the King's School, Golden Gate and Gaiety Halls, where he also refereed matches. Among his pupils were his grandsons, Jim Barron Jr. and Roy Barron. Jim Barron too was a well-known breeder and judge of bulldogs.

According to The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate, Barron suffered a "paralytic stroke" in 1934.
