- Referee Johnny Behr - the sole arbiter in the contest - stated that he had Flanagan winning 56-55 up until failing to leave his corner for the 7th round.
- Dr. J.P. Korchik, the state boxing commission physician, stated that Flanagan suffered a deeply-bruised shoulder, but that there was no dislocation.
- "Only Del knows how bad he was hurt. But I know that he was ready to beat a world champion - and was doing it - when the end came." -Lou Viscusi, Flanagan's manager
"A bruised shoulder last night forced Del Flanagan to lose by a 6th round TKO a fight he was winning up to that point from Jimmy Carter, New York, world lightweight champion. Carter weighed 135 1/4 and Flanagan 137 1/2 as they started the 10 round non-title event. Flanagan said he suffered the injury in a heavy collision with Carter in the 4th round and that it was accented when he missed with a hard left seconds later." -Associated Press
