Percy Bassett 134 lbs lost to Jimmy Carter 136 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10
"Jimmy Carter, upset winner over Percy Bassett last night, may have earned a title shot with lightweight champ Ike Williams. Carter snapped Bassett's 21-fight winning streak last night at St. Nicholas Arena, winning a 10-round decision over the Philadelphian. A badly damaged left eye that was swollen shut in the last round, handicapped Bassett. Still, he put up a good scrap and was coming strong in the middle rounds. Carter, a 14-5 underdog, rocked Bassett in the 3rd, 7th and 10th rounds, but was hurt himself by Bassett in the 8th." -Associated Press
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 6-3-1 Carter
- Attendance - 1,254
- Gate - $2,984
- Carter had lost a week earlier to Calvin Smith and blamed the loss on a 6 month layoff, not having fought since July of 1950. However, it is apparent he fought a 10-rounder in October against Tommy Campbell.
Post-fight comment
- "I consider Jimmy Carter the best of the lightweights around and is the logical contender. I'll wait until Jim Norris comes back from Miami on Friday. The IBC can have the Williams-Carter lightweight championship match if it wants it." -Blinky Palermo, Ike Williams' manager.
