Jimmy Clabby's date of death is sometimes said to be January 18, 1934. He was the son of a saloon keeper, and brother of fellow boxer Eddie Clabby.

He reportedly squandered over $500,000 in ring earnings, only to be found dead of starvation in a shack at the edge of Calumet City during the Great Depression.
