Jimmy Ellis was born in California and went to Boise State on a football scholarship. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Raiders and would go on to play three games in the NFL during the 1987 strike, but would return to Boise soon afterwards to finish his degree. He is the younger brother of heayweight John Ellis.
