From United Press International:
Don Fullmer shook off the best punches of James Ellis last night and hammered out a split decision over the classy Louisville middleweight. Fullmer, 162¼, presented a moving target which frustrated the usually sharp-shooting Ellis, 164¼. Neither fighter was knocked down in the bruising battle, but Ellis bled freely from cuts over both eyes and Fullmer had a bloody nose. Referee Don Asbury and Judge Harlow Edwards scored the bout for Fullmer by a one-point margin, while Judge Sid Baer gave the nod to Ellis by the same margin. The decision received a mixed reaction from the crowd of less than 500.
- Unofficial UPI scorecard - 48-46 Ellis
