Benton entered the fight rated sixth in the world at middleweight. The Associated Press reported that it was a slow-moving fight. Benton landed the only heavy punches of the fight in the ninth round when he stunned Ellis with three lefts to the head. The fight was the main event for the annual Deborah Hospital "Fight for Life" Benefit Show.
