"Jimmy Ellis, former WBA heavyweight titleholder, took a step toward a boxing comeback Tuesday night with a knockout victory over 'Irish' Tony Doyle at 2:42 of the final round of a scheduled 10-rounder. Ellis, 198 1/4, Louisville, looked sharp as he dominated the fight against Doyle, 207, of Salt Lake City. Doyle was down for the eight-count twice in the 7th round and got up the second time just four seconds before the bell ended the round. Ellis boxed conservatively in the 8th and 9th rounds but came out for blood in the 10th. He hit Doyle with a hard right that put him down for the 10-count by referee Cy Gottfried. Doyle's best round was the 4th, when he hurt Ellis with a strong right hand delivered in a series of combinations." -United Press International
