McLarnin was making his first appearance in a special event, against Grandetta who was announced as the "Hollywood Sheik." McLarnin took every round by a wide margin, planting lefts to Grandetta's face.
Grandetta entered the ring with his hair slicked back, and according to one Willie Duffy, spent half an hour in his dressing room manicuring his nails before the fight.
