"Jimmy McLarnin won a 10-round decision from Young Jack Thompson but the crowd that saw the fight in MSG last night will testify that that doesn't half tell the story. the baby-faced Irish lad from Vancouver, B.C., fractured his right hand in the 1st round and saw stars in the 5th round in which he also came near being disqualified for low punches and then had to weather some of the toughest battling of his career before Joe Humphries raised his hand at the finish. The decision was unanimous, referee Jimmy Crowley and the two judges all voting for McLarnin, but at the end of the 5th it was anybody's fight, Jimmy going to his corner with a split across the bridge of his nose. With his most dangerous weapon disabled, McLarnin was forced to resort to ring courage and cunning to stave off the San Francisco negro. Neither fighter was down, but it looked like McLarnin might go down in the 5th under Thompson's furious attack while the Californian himself was weak and weary during the last few seconds of the final round which saw some of the fastest fighting here in years." -United Press
- McLarnin was warned six times during the bout by the referee for low-blows and back-hand punches. Three times alone in the 5th round where Jimmy Crowley threatened to DQ McLarnin.
