"Canadian heavyweight champion Earl Walls of Toronto looked ahead today to a title bout with James J. Parker after outpointing Jimmy Slade of the Bronx by unanimous decision in a 10 rounder at Maple Leaf Gardens Monday night. Walls won because he was the aggressor. His victory avenged a loss to Slade back in '51 and solidified his Ring Magazine rating as 5th ranking contender for the world title. In the 4th round Walls caught his opponent with a roundhouse right that drove the New Yorker to the ropes but Slade recovered quickly. Slade's best rounds were the 7th and 10th when he ducked in to score repeatedly with left hooks." -Canadian Press
- Originally, Walls was to defend his Canadian title against James J. Parker on January 11th, but Parker came down with an intestinal flu, which postponed the match. Slade was a replacement.
