Referee Charles Crowley and Judge Joe Angello voted for Slattery, while Judge Arthur Donovan voted for a draw. Scozza claimed that he had "been robbed." Based upon this win, Slattery was orecognized as light heavyweight championship by the NYSAC. "Slattery outgeneraled his rival until the 9th round and it was fortunate for him that he did because in the closing four rounds he was compelled to use all the generalship of which he is capable to stave off a knockout and survive the full 15 rounds. Slattery was all but KOed in the 13th session when Scozza launched a hurricane attack" and he was saved by the bell. (James P. Dawson, New York Times).
