James "Jimmy" Williams is a former football cornerback at Southern Connecticut State University. He began boxing at age 8, but stopped to concentrate on football in high school. He was an All-State, All-County and All-Area pick at Plainfield (N.J.) High School as a senior and tabbed as one of the top 100 players in Connecticut. Alongside football, Williams was an All-State selection in track and field, where he was the New Jersey champion in the 400 meters. Williams was undrafted by the NFL, but was invited to workout for the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts, and Atlanta Falcons.
In November of 2008 Williams' mother, Belinda Jordan Williams, 44, was found strangled to death in Plainfield, New Jersey. The murder remains unsolved. "It’s very frustrating for all of us," Williams said. "I feel like half of me died the day she died. We just hope some day we can get some answers. I take her spirit with me every time I step in the ring. I fear nothing.”
