Joe Attwood joined up at the start of the Great War and as Sergt. Attwood of His Majesty's Canadian Army took part in numerous inter-allied tournaments as welterweight champion of the Canadian army. One of his last bouts in uniform was a January 1919 points victory over England's Fred Newberry at London's National Sporting Club.
