"Dave Charnley, British lightweight boxing champion, knocked out former world champion Joe Brown in 2:45 of the 6th round of a 10 rounder at Belle Vue Stadium Monday night. The 27 year old Charnley got revenge for two previous defeats at the hands of the wily 37 year old Brown. The end came just before the finish of the 6th round when the British champion got in a hard left to the jaw, followed by four punches to the body that hurt the American. Charnley sensed he had his man going and charged in for the kill with a hail of punches. Brown slumped on to the ropes and then curled on the floor. He tried to beat the count but just failed." -Associated Press

- "It depends on this left eye. The last two punches caught me there and it seems that his whole fist landed in my eye." -Joe Brown, on whether or not he would continue fighting.
