Joe Brown 137 lbs lost to Paul Armstead 139 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Youth was served in an impressive fashion at Kezar Pavilion last night. Paulie Armstead, who lays claim to the California State lightweight title, emerged victorious in an easy 10-rounder presented by the National Boxing Club. Armstead ridiculed one of the all-time masters of the ring by taking a lopsided, unanimous decision from former world lightweight champion Joe Brown. Any ideas 'Old Bones' might have entertained about getting a shot at world lightweight champ Carlos Ortiz were erased by the constant staccato pf Armstead's left jabs on his aged countenance. Brown's timing was off, and he never seemed able to untrack himself. The 38-year-old battler couldn't have thrown his vaunted right hand more than ten times during the fight. Brown's best showing came midway through the 9th round when he ripped Armstead's jaw with a left hook and then followed with a solid right cross which made the winner grab and hold on. However, Armstead rallied to take the round on our card." -San Mateo Times

  • Unofficial San Mateo Times scorecard - 8-0 Armstead

Post-fight comments

  • "My next fight will be June 21st in Panama against Esteban Santamaria, who's the champion down there. I understand he's a very tough boy. As for this fight, Armstead was a better fighter than he was in Sacramento." -Joe Brown
  • "Paul is ready to fight anybody. We want Luis Molina, Kenny Lane, or Carlos Hernandez of Venezuela. But we want to fight them here. We also want Carlos Ortiz but all the good fighters are trying to dodge us." -Augie DeMiltie, Armstead's manager
