- Date: 1975-02-28
- Location: Palazzetto dello Sport, Bologna, Emilia Romagna, Italy
- Referee: Rudolf Drust
"Joe Bugner, 228, of Britain retained his EBU heavyweight title Saturday night by stopping challenger Dante Cane, 240, of Italy in the 5th round of their 15-round bout at the Bologna Sports Palace. Cane, bleeding from the left eye, was judged unfit to begin the 5th round of the fight that seemed like the replay of their encounter in Nottingham three years ago. After a fast, jab-filled and even 1st round, Bugner opened a small cut on the right eye of Cane in the 2nd. In the 3rd, blood gushed out from Cane's left eye and from then on the fight deteriorated into uncontrolled wild punching by the two boxers. Before the beginning of the 5th, referee Rudolf Drust of Germany examined Cane's left eye and declared him unfit to continue the fight, declaring Bugner the winner." -Associated Press
- Prior to the bout, Andy Smith, Bugner's manager, announced that negotiations were underway for a Muhammad Ali-Joe Bugner title fight, which took place four months later.
