  • Date: 1894-12-21
  • Location: Monumental A.C., Baltimore, Maryland, USA
  • Gans Fails to Stop Sweigart.

At the Monumental tournament room last night Joseph Gans the well-known colored light-weight pugilist, failed in his attempt to stop Fred. Sweigart, of local note, in ten rounds, as he contracted to do, and Sweigart got the gate money. A large crowd was present and the sum was bigger than most local pugilists fight for.

The men weighed close to 125 pounds each. To the surprise of all Sweigart was aggressive in the first round. He used these tactics to prevent Gans from doing the same act and the round was in his favor.

The rest of the rounds were Gans's, but he only became the aggressor in the fourth. In the last six rounds, thought Gans had the better of the contest he was dubious about his advantage and failed to follow his best blows.

Sweigart was game to the backbone and kept his opponent in awe, being very ready after receiving a hard blow to give a hard return. Both were strong at the finish.
