Joe Gans beat Paul Johnson by PTS in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1895-01-11
  • Location: Monumental Theatre, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
  • Another Victory for Gans.

Joseph Gans, the champion colored Southern light-weight, defeated Paul Johnson, colored, in ten rounds at the Monumental tournament-room last night. Arthur Coates, of Washington, who was to have met Gans, did not appear.

Gans displayed good ring generalship. During the first five rounds Gans danced away from his big and dangerous antagonist, out jabbing him when good opportunities occured. From the sixth round Gans grew gradually aggressive, and toward the last landed three blows for every one he received.

The early worrying work and the concluding punishment made Johnson slowed and slower, while his wary antagonist kept up his winning tactics to the end.
