Hand became involved in boxing after buying a share of Cloverlay, Inc., the management group involved in the career of Joe Frazier. While working with Cloverlay, learned the closed circuit side of promotion, building an operation of closed circuit telecasts in the Greater Philadelphia Area. Hand left the Frazier team, before his bout with George Foreman.

In the late 1970s, Hand moved over to promotion, and became a successful promoter in Atlantic City and in Philadelphia.
