Obituary

Joesph DeNota, "Joe Jackson" - formerly of Margate and moved to Galloway, passed on January 30, 2012. He was born August 10, 1922 in South Philadelphia. Growing up in Philadelphia, Joe worked at the family bar "Jimmy's Place". Later he joined the Cavalry division, where he spent two years with the Army. While there, he became quite an avid fighter and trainer in the world of boxing, with 11 fights under his belt. Soon after, he began training upcoming boxers such as Lou Champione and Jimmy Sulla. For a while Joe and Angelo Dundee were close friends trying to find boxers to train and promote across the country in the late 1940's. He worked for Atlantic City Water Department for more than 20 years and was responsible for starting their union where he later became shop steward. He fought for rights that allowed a lot of his co-workers to keep their jobs. While working there in 1970, he and a coworker ran into a burning building and saved a two year old and three year old. He was awarded a medal of recognition from the city for his heroic actions.
