Joe Matone was born Carmine Baglino in 1923. His mother - Autelia, and father - Michael, were recent immigrants from Naples, Italy. A native of Brooklyn, N. Y., he began his boxing career in the early 1940s until his last bout in 1944. Upon receiving injury during that bout, Matone was rushed to a hospital where he emerged partially paralyzed thus ending his carrer. A minor celebrity in New York during his career, he frequented clubs such as Toot Shores accompanied by sports writers and other celebrities. He was friendly with actress Kathryn Grayson. After working briefly at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, he married Lina Siciliano. Subsequently, he moved to Rocca Rainola, a community outside Naples, Italy where he lived until his death in 1991.
