Monte's family moved to Brockton, Massachusetts, from Brazil when he was two-years-old. He started out as a 160 lb amateur in 1922, winning the New England Title two years in a row, then took the junior division National Light Heavyweight Championship. He represented the United States in the May 1926 Pan-Am Games held at Buenos Aires, Argentina, losing a points verdict to Guillermo Silva of Uruguay. Monte turned pro in July 1926 under the management of Johnny Buckley.
A torn retina cost him the sight of his left eye and caused him to prematurely retire from the ring in 1930. Monte became a brewery reprtesentative, a post he held for 36 years. He will always be remembered as a tough club fighter who never failed to give fans their money's worth.
According to his Petition For Naturalization in digital form on the Massachusetts, State and Federal Naturalization Petitions, 1795-1950 database on Ancestry.com, one Joseph Harry Montagano, a "Boxer," was born in 'Villa Del Lincoln, Brazil' (in reality the city of Lençóis in São Paulo) on March 21, 1904 and resided in Brockton, Massachusetts. During April 1906, he left Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and arrived in New York, New York. Montagano had resided in Massachusetts since May 15, 1906. Montagano signed the petition on May 29, 1929 and became a U.S. citizen on October 14, 1929.
