In 1936 Joe Routt, lineman for the Texas A&M Football team, became the first player for that team ever to earn All-American honors. Routt died in Belgium in the Battle of the Bulge; he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star. Routt was elected to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1952 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1962.
