His older brother Peter Sharpe was also a boxer. They came from the Balkan Street / Slate Street area of Belfast's Lower Falls. Jim Jordan, an Empire Games lightweight finalist, against Scotland's Dick McTaggart at Cardiff, was a primary school classmate of Joe Sharpe. Jordan, also to turn professional, said: "I am now 79 years of age. Joe would have been around the same age bracket. We were at St Comgall's Primary School on the Falls Road. Later on, we met in the ring, in the Ulster amateur Youth semi-finals, in St Malachy's Hall. I boxed out of the St George's Club in the Markets district, and won the title. I think Joe then boxed amateur for the Belfast Star Club, under their great coach Akkie Kelly. Jim 'Spike' McCormick also boxed amateur for the Star club, while Peter Sharpe boxed out of the Belfast Immaculata Club before turning professional.
