Joe Tufaro won the 1952 New York Golden Gloves 135lb Sub-Novice Championship. Tufaro defeated Robert Woodside of the Department of Parks in the finals to win the Championship. In 1953 Tufaro advanced to the finals of the 135lb Open division and was defeated by Benny Artist of the McKenna Post VFW. Tufaro trained at the Police Athletic League.
