Joey Archer 160 lbs beat Don Fullmer 158 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10

"Joey Archer of New York scored his 30th straight pro victory last night with solid left jabs and left hooks and sharp rights to the body for an upset majority 10 round decision over middleweight contender Don Fullmer at MSG. Fullmer won the opening round by a wide margin with his wild hooking attack and had an advantage in the 2nd. But then Archer's boxing skill and straighter punching began to pay off. He bloodied Fullmer's nose in that 3rd session and smashed him with four hard rights to the head. He also scored with the left jab and combinations to the head. There were no knockdowns." -United Press International

  • Despite New York beseiged by a 24 hour blizzard, which immobilized traffic, 1,300 still attended the fight.
  • Judge Leo Birnbaum scored the bout even in rounds 5-5, but when utilizing NY's supplemental system for an even score, he still came up with a draw 6-6 in points.
  • Unofficial UPI scorecard - 6-4 Archer

  • "If that's the way they score fights here in New York. I'm not having Gene Fullmer fight here. This kind of stuff is sure to kill boxing." -Marv Jensen, manager of the Fullmer brothers.
