Per the Sept. 23, 1925 Tacoma News Tribune (Tacoma, WA, USA) and other newspaper wire reports, Coffman was wanted by authorities for murder. It was said he had strangled a logger in Siskiyou County (Oregon) during a robbery. Coffman was arrested on August 24, 1956 in Portland by FBI agents, on a charge of robbing a bank of $2,000 in San Antonio earlier in the month on August 8th. The clerk at the bank had noticed that the robber had only three fingers on his right hand, which matched the description of Coffman who had lost two fingers a few years before. Coffman subsequently plead guilty, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
