Charley Cotton 154 lbs beat Joey Giardello 160 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

"Charley (King) Cotton had his second straight victory over Joey Giardello, a reputation, and a few offers against more name fighters today. The officials gave energetic Charley a split decision over Giardello in their bruising 10 round telecast tussle at St. Nicholas Arena last night. When Giardello was given the chance to box, he did a neat job of jabbing and hooking with his left hand. But he tired in most rounds after about two minutes and absorbed some crunching rights to the jaw and ear. In the 4th and 6th especially, Charley hurt his experienced opponent with overhand rights to the jaw. He couldn't floor him, however. There were no knockdowns but both were well-battered around the eyes. Giardello also was cut slightly over the right eye." -Associated Press

  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 5-4-1 Giardello

  • "It's music to hear the promoters talk now. It wasn't so long ago that nobody wanted any part of him. He makes a fight and the customers like it." -Hymie Wallman, Cotton's manager
