"Joey Giardello barely staved off Randy Sandy for a split decision in a 10 round nationally televised bout at the Chicago Stadium Wednesday night. Joey exploded his best shots in the first few rounds but they failed to slow up Randy. The tall New Yorker kept moving in on the plodding Giardello and scored frequently with raking lefts to the body. Joey, sensing he had to win the final two rounds to win the fight, staggered Randy with a right to the head in the 9th. In the 10th, both threw caution to the wind and leveled their best shots at each other. In one tangle along the ropes, both went through the strands onto the ring apron. the referee counted to seven before the fighters squared off again.
