A left, right, and another right knocked Calhoun down in the 4th round for a nine-count. Calhoun went right back into action with Giardello following the knockdown, as Giardello was able to stagger him twice more in the 4th round with left hooks. Calhoun did not appear to have recovered in the 5th round, and he was dropped again for a five-count by a right hand counter. Giardello was in complete control thereafter, opting to counter punch off the punches thrown by Calhoun.
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 97-91 Giardello
- The Hayward Daily Review stated that there was an attendance of 11,000 at the Cow Palace rather than the 8,891 reported by the Oakland Tribune. The disparity in attendance figures could possibly be due to the fact that customers threatened to breakdown the turnstiles when there were no more $2.50 cheap seats available, so the promoters offered $1.50 SRO to the customers.
Post fight comment
