Joey Giardello vs. Spider Webb
Joey Giardello 159 lbs lost to Spider Webb 159 lbs by TKO at 1:30 in round 7 of 10
- Date: 1958-11-19
- Location: Cow Palace, Daly City, California, USA
- Referee: Vern Bybee
"Spider Webb surprised 8,571 Cow Palace fans and a national television audience last night when he slashed and cut 2-1 favorite Joey Giardello into bloody TKO submission at 1:30 of the 7th round in a scheduled 10 rounder. Giardello started puffing beneath his eyes in the 1st round, and at the end of the 3rd session a slight cut was opened beneath his left eye. The wound was worsened during a furious 4th round and in the 6th a gash was opened over the left eye and another beneath the right eye. Joey's corner was unsuccessful in stemming the heavy bleeding and, after Giardello absorbed almost a minute of continuous punishment on his battered face, referee Vern Bybee halted the fight at 1:30 of the 7th. Giardello had some success with a right lead during the fight, but for the most part, Joey was an easy target for Spider's lightning jab and quick hooks and crosses in close. The pair had the crowd screaming in the 4th, when Giardello scored with two good straight rights and a left-right combination, only to have Webb come back with a terrific barrage which had Joey's head bouncing like a punching bag." -Oakland Tribune
- Gate - $42,790
- Purses - Giardello: $15,084.40, Webb: $13,237.00 (this is including the TV monies which came to $4,000 for each fighter)
Post fight comments
- "Webb apologized for the foul. It was strictly an accident. Those things happen when you're fighting hard and bang heads. I've butted a lot of guys the same way by accident. I'll let these wounds heal and then I'll fight him again." -Joey Giardello, on what he claimed was a butt resulting in his cut over the left eye.
- "Joey never hurt me, but I never felt I had the fight won until they stopped it. Giardello is a clean, gracious fighter. It was the bloodiest fight i've ever been in." -Spider Webb
