"Joey Giardello gave his greatest performance last night before a crowd of 8,195 in MSG. He floored Willie Troy three times and stopped him at :39 seconds of the 7th round. Troy made a great fight of it despite two trips to the canvas in the 1st round and one in the 2nd. Each knockdown was caused by booming rights to the head. Giardello had Willie battered into such helplessness that referee Al Berl stopped the bout in the 7th."

  • Despite Giardello's demands for a summer title shot, Robert Christenberry of the NY state boxing commission, suggested that since Rocky Castellani, who was rated #1 in the world, and Giardello, who was rated #2, meet in a challenger's battle since both already had $2,500 posted with the commission as challengers.
  • Despite a claim by Giardello's associates that he was guaranteed $15,000 for the Troy fight, matchmaker Billy Brown of MSG stated that Giardello's end of the purse, which was 35% of the net gate plus TV monies, came to $12,631 and that Troy would receive $8,159.
