Puig moved to New York at an early age. While working as a barber, he became interested in boxing and won 12 of 13 contests, and acquired the Golden Gloves flyweight title in 1935. When he was in California in 1937 he broke his hands in a loss to Jackie Jurich. Film actors Joe. E. Brown and Wayne Morris took an interest in him and got him extra work in the studios while his hands mended. He returned to New York in 1939.
