John Conteh 181 lbs beat Fred Lewis 183 lbs by TKO in round 3 of 10

  • Date: 1973-12-14
  • Location: The Stadium, Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom
  • Referee: Wally Thom

"Fast-rising John Conteh, stopped Fred Lewis in the 3rd round, and might have knocked him out if the referee hadn't stepped in. It was a special fight for John, even though Lewis is older and a preacher as well as a fighter. For Conteh, this was his first professional appearance in his home city, Liverpool. With Lewis wobbly from a left hook to the jaw and a right hand behind his ear, referee Wally Thom stopped in to end the fight.. It was slightly over two minutes into round three. Lewis was in excellent shape, more experienced and confident of giving Conteh some trouble. But John had more going for him and used it to win." -World Boxing, May 1974 issue

  • After a professional career dating back to 1956, Lewis retired after this bout.
