  • WBO Junior Middleweight Championship (3rd defense by Jackson)

Jackson, Former Seattle Resident, Wins By Decision To Retain Wbo Light-Middleweight Title
The Seattle Times, October 24, 1990

LEICESTER, England - John David Jackson, who attended high school in Seattle, floored Chris Pyatt in the 11th round yesterday and went on to a unanimous decision to retain his World Boxing Organization light-middleweight title.

As if to dispel doubts following his unconvincing previous defense in Paris, where the fight was declared a no-decision, Jackson jabbed his way to a convincing victory over the big-punching Briton.

There was a dispute over the count in Paris, when French challenger Martin Camara appeared to knock Jackson out in the 11th round. The fight at first was declared no contest but the WBO later declared Jackson champion.

Yesterday there was no mistake.

Jackson, 27, who now lives in Lansdale, Pa., peppered Pyatt with right-hand jabs and built up a points lead over the British fighter, who tried to land big hooks and sometimes swung aimlessly.

Jackson, a left-hander, looked like the better boxer throughout the fight.

Realizing he was far behind on the judges' cards, Pyatt went for a knockout and paid the price when he was floored by a short right in the 11th. He was given a standing eight count by referee Ishmael Quinones of Puerto Rico.

The three officials, all from Puerto Rico, scored the contest 117-111, 118-109 and 116-112.

If the Camara fight counts, it was Jackson's third title defense. He is unbeaten in 23 fights. [1]
