John L Sullivan beat James McCoy by KO in round 1

  • Date: 1883-10-17
  • Location: McKeesport, Pennsylvania, USA
  • McCoy was Sullivan's first challenger of his 1883-1884 "Grand Tour," another of his exhibition tours criss-crossing through the country offering to pay the locals to step into the ring with him. The champion and his people had been through Maryland, Virginia, and several parts of Pennsylvania before, in McKeesport (a town outside of Pittsburgh)McCoy stepped forward to contest for the five hundred dollar reward. Covered in tattoos, including flowers, anchors, snakes, and dragons, McCoy might have looked the part of a rough, tough scrapper, but did not live up to the promise. Outweighed by more than forty pounds, he landed few punches before a one-two combination from Sullivan put him flat. After twenty seconds, it was all over.
