John L Sullivan 215 lbs beat Paddy Ryan 210 lbs by KO in round 3

  • Date: 1886-11-13
  • Location: Mechanic's Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA
  • John L. Sullivan was the reigning heavyweight champion of the world. Paddy Ryan, a former champion, was nearly destitute.

Scheduled for four rounds under Marquess of Queensberry Rules, the fight took place at Mechanics' Pavilion in San Francisco, California, before nine thousand spectators.

The fight started off as a slugfest, with both men going toe-to-toe until Ryan quickly tired. In the second round, Sullivan landed a perfectly timed counter punch to drop his fading opponent and, when Ryan got up, put him down twice more before the close of the round.

Ryan fought a brave fight and came out for the third, but had nothing left. He was devastated by a right hand and floored twice more before the police interrupted.
